Session Description

This presentation is suited to frontline nurses looking to explore the concept of medical assistance in dying (MAiD). This session will encourage open and honest reflection of values and beliefs and explore difficult conversations. We will review the recent legislative changes to MAiD. Guide personal reflection on MAiD and explore personal value and beliefs. Discuss difficult conversations around death and dying, managing ambiguous conversations and requests for medical assistance in dying, and consider nursing interventions versus recommendation of MAiD. Explore how ageism effects the conversations and communication about MAiD.

Objectives

  1. Identify personal values and beliefs in regard to MAiD.
  2. Identify ambiguous MAiD requests.
  3. How to be conscious objector and safely provide care to patients making request for MAiD.
  4. Understand and engage in difficult conversations about death and dying.
  5. Identify ageism in MAiD communication.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this workshop, participants will have a better understanding of the following:


  1. More fully understand how personal values align with medical assistance in dying and how to safely manage a patients request for medial assistance in dying.
  2. Understand new legislative changes.
  3. Understanding conscious objections and duty to care 
  4. Identify ambiguous death and dying conversations and demonstrate tools to manage them.
  5. Identify ageism in medical assistance in dying communication.

Workshop Format

The workshop will be a combination of personal reflection, didactic instruction and group work.
