Session Description

Gerontological nurses complete work that matters to the discipline and to the populations that we serve. This workshop focuses on how to publish your important work in a peer-reviewed journal. The session targets gerontological nurses interested in understanding the process for publishing the results from their graduate work or clinical quality improvement.

Objectives

  1.  To explore potential paper topics suitable for publication in a peer-review journal.
  2. To discuss strategies to move your important work towards submission for academic publication.
  3. To provide tips on managing peer review feedback and comments.
  4. To foster building networks to identify potential collaborators and mentors to support your publication journey.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify a relevant topic suitable for publication in a peer-review journal.
  2. Understand that publishing is a process, and identify strategies to assist them at different stages of the publishing process.
  3. Use a structured approach to effectively address reviewer feedback.
  4. Describe the importance of teams and collaboration in writing academic publications.

Workshop Format

In this workshop, there will be presentations from panelists, opportunity to build your network, and an exercise to practice addressing reviewer feedback.

  • Panel discussion with Q & A (1 hr)- a panel of nurses who can speak to different aspects of the publishing process (e.g., choosing a journal, dealing with rejection, managing peer reviewer feedback) from different perspectives (e.g., author, peer reviewer, editor, student).
  • Responding to reviewer feedback activity (1 hr)- participants will work individually or in small groups to address reviewer feedback using a structured approach (facilitated by the workshop presenters and panel)
  • Speed networking (30 min)- participants will have an opportunity to further discuss questions or comments with individuals with diverse experience with academic publishing.
