Session Description

Ageism is present in many forms in many social structures, including the health care. Nurses and other health care professionals may hold ageist attitudes they are unaware of, and institutions such as hospitals and other health services may have ageism embedded in policies and procedures. The purpose of this workshop is to provide information on ageism, and provide gerontological nurses an opportunities to reflect on and discuss how this form of discrimination, even in a benevolent form may adversely affect the care of older persons and what can be done to address it.

Objectives

  1.  Explore definitions and types of ageism in healthcare and among health care providers
  2. Reflect and discuss on our own view of aging and the nature of ageism in nursing education and practice.
  3. Identify opportunities for gerontological nurses to identify ageist practices and mitigation strategies to improve health outcomes for older persons

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this workshop, participants will have a better understanding of the following:

  1. How different types of ageism can affect our nursing practice and the settings in which we work.
  2. How ageism can negatively affect the health of older persons.
  3. Be able to identify at least three strategies to take back to their work setting to address ageist practices.

Workshop Format

This will be an interactive workshop employing a variety of learning and discussion opportunities. Didactic presentation of definitions and types of ageism will lay the foundation for self reflection and small group discussion. Large group discussion of mitigation strategies drawn from the small group work will provide attendees with approaches to take back to their work setting.
